Proper Pronunciation

m61's picture

The other day I was reading an article on The Techrepublic, and in the article, the guy was talking about the proper pronunciation on certain tech-terms in use today.

The example described in the article was how do you pronounce URL? Do you pronounce it "earl"? Or do you pronounce it "you-are-ell"? After reading the article and some of the comments, I got to thinking about other terms and their pronunciation. I, for one, pronounce URL as "you-are-ell", as it is an acronym [Uniform Resource Locator], but it's so commonplace these days, it pretty much can be it's own word.

Other examples are SQL. Is it pronounced "ess-que-ell"? Or "sequel"? For me, going through the college program I did, we had a lot of exposure to open source software, and thus MySQL. It can be pronounced as either "My Ess Que Ell" or "My Sequel", but what about PostgreSQL? As "post-gress-que-ell" it works fine, but "postgre-sequel"? Thus from these two examples, it seems as though SQL is pronounced "ess-que-ell". Fine and dandy, but what about Microsofts SQLServer? Everyone I know pronounce it "Sequel Server", and I mean EVERYONE I know.

What do you all think about this? Should it be standardized in the work place? Or what about the Internet? I think it should as it would make conversing with other people a lot easier as they would know what you are talking about.

EDIT: fixed a type-o in the first link
